US to send Mexico 8.5 million COVID-19 vaccines

Aug, 11 2021 at 06:04 AM (UTC)

According to Mexican officials, the United States will be sending them 8.5 million doses of the COVID-19 as the country battles a third wave of infections from the virus. The US will be sending AstraZeneca and Moderna vaccines, although the latter has not yet been approved by Mexican regulators. Mexico received the news during a Monday call between US Vice President Kamala Harris and Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. However, the White House Press Secretary said that they have not yet confirmed an exact number or timeline for the vaccines. Mexico has received about 91.2 million vaccines in total, with 51 million people having received one dose and another 27 million fully vaccinated. Mexico has experienced more than 244,000 test-confirmed deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. However, the country has done significantly less testing than other countries and death certificates indicate that the total might be closer to 370,000. https://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/us-send-85-million-doses-covid-19-vaccine-79384332

More than 1,000 Boko Haram terrorists surrender in Bama, Nigeria

Aug, 10 2021 at 02:56 AM (UTC)

About 1,081 Boko Haram terrorists, including some senior commanders and their families, have surrendered to troops involved in Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK). The insurgents were located in Bama, Nigeria and surrendered after sustained military land and air bombardments on their hideouts. This event came soon after it became apparent that Boko Haram insurgents in the region were struggling with internal skirmishes, famine, health challenges, and other issues that were making life exceedingly difficult for the extremists. Weapons and ammunition were also recovered during the operation. Officials have encouraged those who surrendered to reach out to their colleagues in Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) to convince them to put down their arms and embrace a new life of peace. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/08/just-in-1-081-boko-haram-terrorists-senior-commanders-surrender-in-bama/

Emergency Alert - Lagos, Nigeria may be uninhabitable by end of century due to flooding

Aug, 04 2021 at 01:23 AM (UTC)

According to current scientific projections, Africa's largest city, Lagos, Nigeria, may be uninhabitable by the end of the century due to flooding. Residents of the coastal city have become used to the yearly flooding that occurs between March and November, but this July brought some of the worst flooding the area has witnessed in years. In addition to elevated chances of flooding due to climate change, the city is also grappling with an eroding coastline. Environmental experts have said that sand mining in the area is a major contributor to erosion of the coastline. In some areas, concrete walls have been erected to reclaim land from the Atlantic Ocean. According to a study conducted by the research group, Climate Central, areas that are now home to more than 200 million people across the world could be permanently below the high tide line, creating a humanitarian crisis as millions attempt to relocate. https://www.cnn.com/2021/08/01/africa/lagos-sinking-floods-climate-change-intl-cmd/index.html
