Emergency Alert - Indonesia sets new record for one-day increase in COVID cases

Dec, 03 2020 at 11:35 PM (UTC)

According to Indonesia's COVID-19 task force, the country has set a new record for a single-day increase in cases with 8,369 being recorded in 24 hours. This is over 2,000 more cases than the previous record set on Sunday, marking a drastic increase. The country has seen a total of 557,877 infections and 17,355 deaths from the virus. However, experts suspect that the actual number of infections may be higher than what has been reported due to low testing. According to task force spokesman, Wiku Adisasmito, the recent spike is partially due to a delay in reporting some cases. However, he went on to indicate that the spike is still a worrying trend because "this shows that the rate of transmission is still increasing."

Emergency Alert - At least 110 killed in attack in Nigeria

Dec, 01 2020 at 01:52 AM (UTC)

At least 110 people have been killed, and others injured, after an attack in Nigeria's Borno state. Boko Haram is believed to be responsible for the attack that targeted farmers while they were working in rice fields. According to Edward Kallon, the United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, “The incident is the most violent direct attack against innocent civilians this year." Reports also suggest that a number of women may have been kidnapped as there are still eight people missing. The attack took place during a long-delayed local election that had been pushed back due to attacks by Boko Haram and rival faction ISWAP. These two groups have been blamed for increasing attacks on farmers, loggers and fishermen, as they believe that civilians are spying on them for the government and pro-government militias.

Emergency Alert - Five dead, others abducted in attack in Nigeria

Nov, 24 2020 at 05:29 PM (UTC)

Five people have been killed and at least 18 others were abducted during an attack on a mosque in Zamfara state, Nigeria. Some claim that as many as 30 people were abducted. Reports claim that roughly 100 cattle thieves approached on motorcycles and opened fire on the congregation during their weekly Friday prayers. According to a resident, the attack happened while the imam was giving a sermon and that the imam was among those who were kidnapped. Gang violence is fairly common in Northwest Nigeria, including both ideological groups such as Boko Haram and more typical gangs that aim to steal and kidnap for ransom. These organizations have murdered around 8,000 people since 2011 and have driven more than 200,000 others from their homes. Military presence and attempted peace talks have done little to stymie the attacks in the area.
