Sep, 30 2020 at 12:00 PM (UTC)

The leader of a kidnapping gang known as Commander Mohammed Sani has disclosed that he and his men have murdered more than 50 kidnapping victims who were unable to pay ransom. Sani, who has been on the police wanted list for several years, leads a sector of more than 100 men who have been responsible for many attacks, particularly along the Abuja-Kaduna highway. However, this sector, among others, is led by the most wanted bandit in the North West, Yellow Jambros. Yellow Jambros is said to have provided Sani with weapons and military clothing for the attacks. Emergency Alert - Boko Haram attempts two assassinations on Governor in Nigeria

Sep, 29 2020 at 12:00 PM (UTC)

Boko Haram militants have staged two assassination attempts on the governor of Nigeria's Borno state in three days. While Governor Babagana Zulum was unharmed in both attacks, 14 police officers and 4 civilians were killed in the first attack. During the second, Boko Haram insurgents strapped explosives to a donkey in an attempt to get them close to the Governor's convoy. When police saw the donkey, they opened fire, causing the explosives to detonate. Insurgents immediately came out of hiding and began firing on the convoy. Luckily, nobody in the convoy was injured in the second attack, but some vehicles were damaged with bullets. Several insurgents were killed when police returned fire. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-54331260

Emergency Alert - Eleven dead after bar massacre in Mexico

Sep, 28 2020 at 12:00 PM (UTC)

As Mexico grapples with record homicide rates, 11 people have been shot dead during an attack at a bar. The bodies of the victims, seven men and four women, were found at the bar near Jaral del Progreso early in the day Sunday. There was no immediate information on the motive, but officials suspect that it was a drug gang killing. Authorities have yet to confirm whether the female victims were dancers at the bar or were involved with the gang. Guanajuato has been the most dangerous state in Mexico in recent years but witnessed a decrease in murders between July and August. Unfortunately, the totals for September are outpacing August and are expected to surpass them. https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/11-killed-bar-shooting-mexicos-violent-state-73281600

Emergency Alert - Drug war in Mexico leaves 39,000 unidentified bodies

Sep, 25 2020 at 09:15 PM (UTC)

Mexico's strict approach on organized crime and drug sales has left almost 39,000 unidentified bodies in their morgues, which have struggled to accommodate the number of bodies that come in for autopsy. Many of these bodies have just been buried in common graves without proper postmortem; others were left at funeral homes and about 2,500 of them have been donated to medical schools. Mexico's militarized crackdown on drugs has left almost 300,000 dead and more than 73,000 missing. The families of those missing are often left to look for their loved ones on their own. According to an article released with the report, “It’s possible that students are learning with bodies of persons being searched for by their families.” Before former president Felipe Calderón deployed armed forces against drug cartels, there were only 178 unidentified corpses in morgues. That number has ballooned to 38,891 in the 13 years since then. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/sep/22/mexicos-drug-war-leave

Emergency Alert - At least 28 dead after explosion in Nigeria

Sep, 24 2020 at 09:43 PM (UTC)

At least 28 people are dead and many others injured after a fuel tanker explosion in the state of Kogi, Nigeria. Bisi Kazeem, spokesman for the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC), said that nine children were involved in the accident. The explosion and subsequent fires that occured on Wednesday also led to the destruction of scores of vehicles, buildings and other valuables. Unfortunately, fuel tanker accidents are fairly common in Nigeria because they often transport crude supplies via roads rather than pipelines. At least 50 people died and 101 were injured when an overturned tanker exploded last year. There was another similar event in 2015 that claimed more than 60 victims. https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/24/africa/nigeria-explosion-oil-tanker-kogi-intl/index.html
