Emergency Alert - Ten people killed during protests in Nigeria

Oct, 14 2020 at 12:00 PM (UTC)

According to Amnesty International, police have killed at least ten people during the ongoing protests in Nigeria. The protests are calling for the abolition of the country's Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) after a recent video surfaced of an officer killing a man who had been detained. In another statement by Amnesty International, they said: "The excessive use of force by the police in response to the protests reveals the longstanding disregard for the right to life by Nigerian security forces." According to inspector general of police, Mohammed Adamu, there are plans to dissolve SARS and replace it with a new unit that will be known as Special Weapons and Tactics, or SWAT. Adamu also said that former police officers from SARS will be included in the new unit but will have to undergo psychological and medical examinations to ensure that they are fit to take part. https://www.cnn.com/2020/10/13/africa/nigeria-police-sars-victims-intl/index.html

Emergency Alert - Brazil surpasses 150,000 COVID related deaths

Oct, 12 2020 at 12:00 PM (UTC)

Brazil has surpassed 150,000 deaths related to COVID-19. The country remains the second-highest in the world, only trailing the United States in deaths, according to numbers collected by Johns Hopkins University. Brazil's president, Jair Bolsonaro, has repeatedly downplayed the severity of the virus as cases and deaths in the country rapidly continued to rise. He has encouraged crowds and rejected governors' and mayors' lockdowns, among other measures, despite the fact that he himself caught the virus in July. Despite the new milestone, the virus does seem to be slowly receding in the country. Over the past week, Brazil has experienced an average of 598 deaths per day, the lowest it has been since the beginning of May. https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-india-archive-f35323b9e5f7d83fb9f2661a78c7d1a2

Emergency Alert - Six dead after shootout in Mexico City

Oct, 06 2020 at 12:00 PM (UTC)

At least six people are dead and four have been injured after a shootout between rival gangs in Mexico City. Additionally, police found two severed heads and bags of severed body parts along roadsides in two cities in Guanajuato state. It is possible that the Jalisco cartel is behind the killings, as banners signed by them appeared around the same time, however, it was not immediately clear who was responsible. During the shooting, assailants approached in a vehicle and opened fire on the victims outside of a restaurant. It appears as though the victims returned fire as there were bullet holes in the car when police later pulled it over. Three individuals from the vehicle were arrested and a firearm was retrieved. https://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2020-10-05/mexico-city-shooting-leaves-6-dead-4-injured
