Emergency Alert - Nine killed at wake in Mexico

Jan, 08 2021 at 11:58 PM (UTC)

At least nine people are dead and one injured after gunmen opened fire at a wake in Guanajuato state, Mexico. The victims were standing outside of a house in a low-income neighborhood where the wake for a young man, who had also been gunned down, was taking place. Security analyst David Saucedo stated that the attack appears to have been carried out by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel because they may have believed that the victims were tied to the Santa Rosa de Lima gang, but many may not have been. A bloody turf war between rival gangs has been raging in Guanajuato for years and the violence continues, despite the capture of the leader of the Santa Rosa de Lima gang in August. Similar mass killings occurred in September and July. https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/killed-attack-wake-mexicos-guanajuato-state-75132259

Emergency Alert - Eleven miners in Pakistan kidnapped and murdered

Jan, 05 2021 at 02:30 AM (UTC)

Eleven coal miners were kidnapped and killed in the Balochistan region of Pakistan on Sunday. Islamic state militants attacked the men while they were sleeping near the remote mine located about 100km (62 miles) from Quetta. Two of the deceased were from Afghanistan, and their bodies have been returned to their home country to be buried. The attack has sparked protests where around 2,500 people are demanding that the attackers be tracked down and brought to justice. Prime Minister Imran Khan referred to the attack as "yet another cowardly, inhumane act of terrorism," and has assured the families of the victims they will not be abandoned by the government. While mines in the country have become notorious for poor safety standards, attacks such as this are rare. https://www.dawn.com/news/1599686/thousands-mourn-hazara-coal-miners-killed-in-balochistan-attack

Emergency Alert - At least 25 have died during protests in India

Dec, 18 2020 at 09:39 PM (UTC)

According to Manoj Yadav, director-general of police in India's Haryana state, at least 25 people have died during farming protests in India over the past three weeks. Fourteen of those deaths have been due to natural causes, including heart attacks and succumbing to the cold; another ten were due to traffic accidents and the remaining one was a suicide that occurred just two days ago. However, farming leader Darshan Pal claims that the death toll may actually be as high as 35. The protests began on November 26 after people were angered by three farming laws passed in September that farmers believe will reduce their income and help big corporations. Prime minister Narendra Modi has offered to "very humbly" engage in further talks with protesting farmers. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/12/18/several-indian-farmers-dead-in-protests-against-farm-laws

Emergency Alert - Nine days of violence leaves at least 13 dead in Mexico

Dec, 11 2020 at 10:19 PM (UTC)

A wave of violence caused by an offensive from Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) lasted nine days and left at least 19 people dead. The most recent attacks occurred when two CJNG cells arrived in the Tierra Caliente municipalities of Chinicuila and Tepalcatepec in armored vehicles and exchanged fire with local police, National Guard troops, and armed civilians. In Chinicuila, government buildings, homes, cars and a school were all damaged as well. Fortunately, there were no casualties in the most recent attack. The attack was also unsuccessful in Tepalcatepec, as residents had recently dug trenches in the road to keep the cartels from entering. However, these two attacks come just two days after 13 people, including 3 bystanders, were killed in the municipalities of Morelia, Zamora and Uruapan. No arrests have yet been made. https://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/jalisco-cartels-offensive-in-michoacan-now-9-days-old/
